Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was raised by parents who were socially aware and showed her how to use art as a method of expressing herself. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton and with her extended family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the famous civil rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama inspired her to write a movie about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she obtained degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content to broadcast journalism while she was still in college. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of members of the juries. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations business. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
