Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artistic expression and creative thinking. She was a night nurse so that she could give her mother the time she needed during the days to be able to enjoy writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote social activism. Her mother, too, was conscious of her social status and taught her to say something through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and educated. DuVernay's father recalled watching the famous civil rights protest over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by town Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama led her later on to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. When she was still studying, DuVernay started to become interested in producing in broadcast journalism. DuVernay began as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage inside the home by a member jury. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism, and she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay began her career working as a junior press assistant for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
